I heard back from Clive and thought the attached would interest. He does not have any more information on the death of James Johnson but did have this great titbit from the Alsager parish registers:

Thomas Johnson the son of John Johnson, bookkeeper of Alsager and Ellen his wife, was born on Monday the 11th October 1790 and baptised on Wednesday 13th October 1790.
Father: the illegitimate son of Margaret Johnson of Betley, the daughter of Daniel Johnson by Elizabeth his wife.
Mother: Daughter of John Timmis by Sarah his wife, the daughter of Peter Hemis of Wolstanton.
